Ingrown nail occurs when the nail irritates the surrounding skin. It is a common problem that can affect any nail, but most often affects the big toe.
Ingrown nail is a very painful condition that can worsen to an infection and lacerations of the skin around the nail. This condition should not be taken lightly. If the ingrown nail is not treated quickly, the skin becomes inflamed and can quickly become infected with the presence of pus and swelling.
COMMON CAUSES OF AN INGROWN NAIL;
- nails that are cut incorrectly or too short
- external pressure from tight shoes
- trauma to the nail, caused for example by an object falling on the nail
- repetitive trauma, caused for example by participating in sports
- genetic factors
- excessive sweating
- poor foot hygiene
- swelling of the feet

What you should do:
- soak your feet daily in a solution made with water and salt (two tablespoons per liter of water), for 10 to 15 minutes, and massage the edges of the nail to clear the ingrown area
- apply an antibiotic ointment (e.g. Polysporin)
- wear comfortable shoes with a wide toe box or open-toed sandals
What to avoid:
- cutting and clearing the nail yourself, or having an unqualified person do it
- playing with the corners of the nail, cuticles or nail edges.
